1) Network Life: The Expert's Guide to the Networked Home

As a network expert you could never really leave work at work,
but now that networks have invaded the home, you're in even
greater demand. Everyone turns to you for advice about what to
buy, how to set it up and, of course, how to fix it. Now you
know how doctors feel. You're not alone. In a recent survey of
1,500 Network World readers, more than 90% reported being asked
for advice about home networks. Our new Network Life site is
here to help - with the latest news and tips on home
technologies and dealing with all the questions you get all the
time after work.

2) No patching panacea

The recent Network World Virtual Showdown, 'How best to patch,'
drew six vendors together in a weeklong debate that ultimately
concluded patch management is best viewed as one facet of a
larger security strategy.

3) Carriers jump into auditing

A growing number of major carriers are in effect addressing the
problem of inaccurate telecom bills this way: 'We'll be happy to
review and audit those bills for you, but for a price.'
DocFinder: 4703
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904audit.html>

4) Profiling cybercrime: Network threats and defense strategies

5) Wireless Wizards: Getting management buy-in for a mesh

6) Nutter's Help Desk: Networking for small business

a Web service to business partners and their authorized users
while securely controlling access.
DocFinder: 4707
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/tech/2004/112904techupdate.html>

8) Op-ed: Vendors: Stop threatening us

Tom Henderson, managing director of ExtremeLabs, grows tired of
vendors threatening to sue customers because of the software
they use. He tells vendors to spend their money on improving
their products - unless they want a mass revolt among their
customers.
DocFinder: 4708
<http://www.nwfusion.com/columnists/2004/112904henderson.html>

9) Forum adds message queuing support

traditional message-queuing protocols.
DocFinder: 4709
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904forum.html>

10) University takes go-slow approach to VoIP

USF's decision to stick with tried-and-true technology rather
than emerging VoIP reflects a change of direction on the part of
its IT staff, which originally wanted a converged network.
DocFinder: 4710
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904usf.html>

11) Verizon weighs in on enterprise nets

12) Do software users need indemnification?

Indemnification essentially is the same as an insurance policy.
Whether an organization needs such insurance depends on its risk
of being sued, experts agree.
DocFinder: 4712
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904ecindemnify.html>

13) Law could sway Philly Wi-Fi rollout

A proposed Pennsylvania law now on its way to the governor's

DocFinder: 4713
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904philly.html>

14) Carrier spending habits changing

Industry watchers say this year will mark a major milestone in
IP networking: U.S. carriers will buy more routers for use in
their private, premium-service IP backbones than for the
Internet backbone.
DocFinder: 4714
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904nolle.html>

15) Citrix buys into better SSL VPN support

Looking to provide customers with more secure remote access to
corporate resources and possibly catapult it to the top echelon
of SSL VPN vendors, Citrix Systems last week said it would buy
SSL VPN vendor Net6.
DocFinder: 4715
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904citrix.html>

16) Leeway found in Wal-Mart's RFID mandate

Wal-Mart's January deadline for its top 100 suppliers to begin
shipping cases and pallets outfitted with radio frequency
identification tags is just around the corner - in theory. The
reality is, compliance is going to be a multi-year effort,
analysts say.
DocFinder: 4716
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904walmart.html>

17) Sun to boost storage package

DocFinder: 4717
<http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/112904sun.html>

18) Cisco CTO: We won't be commoditized

Charlie Giancarlo, a 10-year Cisco veteran, took over as the

IDC Whitepaper: Assessing the Benefits of Managed Remote Access

Although many companies have historically chosen to build out
remote access solutions in-house, the cost of infrastructure;
complexity of design and management in multiple access
technology environments; and the growing diversity of remote
workers, usage patterns, and device types make this approach
much less desirable for the modern business environment.
Register now to receive recommendations from IDC on how to
assess the benefits of managed remote access.
