Friedman Provides Options on Line

For Lennie Friedman, the game of football is all about role playing.

Friedman's value to the Washington Redskins comes from his ability to play
almost any position
at any time. Two weeks ago, he Friedman stepped into the lineup when right
guard Randy Thomas
suffered a groin injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. Then it was back to
the bench for
Sunday's 16-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field as rookie Mark
Wilson made his
NFL starting debut at right tackle. (Right tackle Ray Brown switched to right
guard, his natural
position.)

But now Friedman may be back in the starting lineup this week against the New
York Giants at
FedEx Field. Wilson suffered a knee injury, and his status won't be known until
later in the
week. If he can't play, Friedman is expected to start at right guard, with
Brown moving to
tackle, for the first time this season.

"My job is to be a backup and to be ready at any time," Friedman said. "And
that's what I'm
going to do. I look at every opportunity as a chance to be on the field and
have fun. Any chance
I get, I try to play the best I can and let the chips fall where they may."

Friedman entered training camp competing with Cory Raymer to be the starting
center. He won
briefly but was replaced by Raymer after some botched snap exchanges with
quarterback Mark
Brunell. Friedman was a reserve for much of the 2003 season but after center
Larry Moore --
since released -- was injured late, Friedman was solid while starting several
games at the
end of the season.

The Redskins look for that kind of versatility; Friedman said that Joe Bugel --
assistant head
coach/offense -- prefers that his players practice at almost every spot on the
line. Friedman
has played left guard extensively but has hardly played right guard in the NFL.

"When you're not a starter in the NFL, that's your role," Friedman said. "You
have to be prepared
to play three different positions. And the big thing is that you're in
meetings, you're paying
attention, and you know your assignments. And then you go out there and you try
to let your
athletic ability put you in the best situations.

"Football is football. You go out there and you try to do the techniques and
put yourself in
the best position to be successful."

Leaving Pittsburgh, they didn't even have that.
