1. WiMax: Between Hype and Hot Stuff

>From Business Week (Topic: WiMax), Nov. 30:
Bruce Chatterley likes alternatives. As the CEO of national
broadband reseller Speakeasy Networks, he relies on the Baby
Bells to provide his residential and business customers with
premium DSL broadband service. And though Chatterley says
the Bells have treated him well, he still wouldn't mind
having other options. Little wonder Chatterley is jumping on
the WiMax bandwagon.

2. Searching Smarter, Not Harder

>From Wired.com (Topic: Search Engines), Nov. 30:
Databases and search engines provide instantaneous access to
endless information about anyone or anything, but the search
results often include as many misses as hits. To generate
more-relevant answers, organizations including the federal
government are using topic maps to index their data.

3. Firm Predicts Slump for Computer Makers

>From eWeek (Topic: Computer Manufacturers), Nov. 30:
Slower growth and reduced profits will likely squeeze three
of the nation's top 10 personal computer manufacturers out
of the market by 2007, a research firm predicted Monday.
While manufacturers' shipments increased by double digits in
the past few years, tougher times lie ahead, according to
Gartner Inc.

4. The Internet's Retail Appeal

>From The New York Times (Topic: E-Commerce), Nov. 29:
(Registration Required)
For online merchants and customers alike, the first
guilt-free holiday shopping season has arrived. Thanks to
the breakneck growth of residential cable modem and D.S.L.
services, this is the first year when most Internet users do
not have to rely on their workplace for high-speed
connections. Instead of hiding the Amazon checkout page when
the boss approaches, more shoppers are logging on after work
and sparing their nerves.

5. Chip Power, Times 10

>From CNN (Topic: Micro-processing), Nov. 29:
IBM, Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. on Monday unveiled some
key details on the powerful new "Cell" processor the three
are jointly producing to run next-generation computers, game
consoles and TVs.

6. GPS Goes Down on the Farm

>From MSNBC.com (Topic: GPS), Nov. 29:
Aided by a computer and a Global Positioning System - a
constellation of Earth-orbiting satellites - a farmer's
tractor can now drive itself. The use of such technology has
increased in the past few years as farmers try to cut costs
to stay profitable as crop prices remain relatively
stagnant. Infrared sensors control how much fertilizer is
applied. Retinal imaging tracks cattle. On the horizon,
perhaps, are tomato-picking robots.

7. AMD: Chip Sales Rebound After U.S. Election

>From Reuters (Topic: Chip Sales), Nov. 23:
Computer chip sales have recovered from a "hiccup" caused by
anxiety surrounding the Nov. 2 U.S. presidential election,
an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. executive said on Tuesday.

8. Hackers Use Web Sites, Ads to Infect PCs

>From The Washington Post (Topic: Hacking), Nov. 23:
(Registration Required)
Hackers co-opted several popular Web sites including
comedycentral.com over the weekend, using them to infect
thousands of computers with a virus that can be used to
steal passwords, bank accounts and other personal
information.
