IDC Whitepaper: Assessing the Benefits of Managed Remote Access

Although many companies have historically chosen to build out
remote access solutions in-house, the cost of infrastructure;
complexity of design and management in multiple access
technology environments; and the growing diversity of remote
workers, usage patterns, and device types make this approach
much less desirable for the modern business environment.

Today's focus: Verizon nixes local number portability charges

By Keith Shaw

Today, we're catching up on some carrier news items that were
announced over the past few weeks:

* Verizon nixes LNP charges

Verizon Wireless has eliminated the portion of its monthly
45-cents regulatory charge that went toward local number
portability (LNP). The company said 40 cents of the regulatory
charge it has been collecting from customers since March 2004
(about $15 million per month) was to help defray the costs to
administer the LNP program. Customers will now pay 5 cents per
month toward other regulatory charges.

* Cingular gulps down AT&T Wireless

I think I can finally stop typing AT&T Wireless, as the merger
between Cingular and the aforementioned company has finally been
completed. The company not only announced the merger completion
but also made a big deal about being able to convert 1,000 AT&T
Wireless company-owned stores into Cingular Wireless stores.
(There are still 10,500 "agent locations" to be converted, but
hey, that's a momentous task.) This brings the total number of
Cingular-owned stores to 2,800.

The combined company now lets users call each other for free
over Cingular's 46 million-member All Over network (Cingular
prefers ALLOVER, which looks a little bit like Al Lover when you
read it in all caps).

Even more exciting (if you're a 12-year-old girl) is "American
Idol" host Ryan Seacrest launching a phone, the
Cingular-exclusive Motorola RAZR V3. The phone has a metallic
finish, camera phone features and works around the world, and
can be purchased online at the Cingular Web site (
<http://www.cingular.com/> ).

* BlackBerry Enterprise now on Sprint

Sprint and Research in Motion announced the launch of the
BlackBerry Enterprise Solution on Sprint's PCS Network. Business
customers can now use a BlackBerry 7750 device on the network to
download e-mail wirelessly, the companies announced.

The service is being sold through Sprint's business sales
channels, and lets users get their e-mail through the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server, which supports Microsoft Exchange and IBM
Lotus Domino (Novell GroupWise is still coming!). The 7750
includes the wireless e-mail features, plus lets users make
voice calls over the Sprint PCS network, and access text
messages, corporate data, manage appointments and browse the
Web.

Head to the Sprint Web site ( <http://www.sprintpcs.com/> ) or
RIM ( <http://www.rim.com/> ) for more details.

CORRECTION: In last week's newsletter we misnamed the HP iPaq
with T-Mobile service. The correct name of that product is iPaq
6315. We apologize for the confusion.
