Here is where I think we will see melding of coding and MDA. At some level of
detail using textual code will be more useful/convenient than graphical
depiction. That is the level where I see the "modeling environment" evolving
into a "code editing environment".
We'll use the visual model/GUI to navigate thru hierarchies of packages and
classes, perhaps even methods, and then to specify behavior
details/constraints, we will simply click or double-click to pop-up a
context-sensitive code-editing dialog that may auto-generate some wrapper code
(based on configurable profiles) and let us type in the textual details.
Whether the textual details will be programming-language, or some attempt at a
"programming-language independent" action/constraint language will be an issue.
MDA Purists will likely want the latter while pragmatists will likely prefer
the former. I think that in time the distinction between the two will blur and
fade.
When that happens, the source code and its design model+description will
literally (or should I say literary ;-) be part of a single artifact and will
have profile-options for pretty-printing and formatting/sequencing, plus it
will be able to automatically trace and capture dependencies.

I think this distinction too will blur and fade. The model-first versus
code-first will be less of an issue, as there will be a little of both first,
and the bigger issue may instead be how to do "test-first" in this melded
Zen-like "model+code are as one" environment. (I think Jacobsen's recent work
on adding "Aspects" to use-cases attempts to touch on some of that)
