Fair enough, but I still think it encourages people to hone their
debugging skills in place of actually knowing what their source code
does _before_ they compile it.
As it transpires, the OP had already determined the nature of the
problem, so changing to a different operating system was, if
anything, only going to confuse the issue. If it works under XP, how
would that help in understanding why it failed on the original
machine? A naive programmer could get the wrong impression that the
original machine is at fault!
