Thank You Mr. Alves,
You have been more help than you know.
Manuel did come from Acores, but he also claimed a small village near Lisbon.
I do not remember his last name. He past away 22 years ago in Seattle Washington.
I met him while fishing on the docks in Seattle.
He was a marvelous story teller, and a very good fisherman.
He taught me to snag squid and how to use them for cod bait.
  Manuel is missed.

The society I am writing this for is a living history group.
We approach the subjects that intrest our members in a way so the knowledge of the
past is appreciated and does not die out.
Seeing how things worked is the fastest way for a child to appreciate history.

  Again, Thank You

Thank you for your welcome.
Apologies accepted, portuguese is not an easy latin language to learn but, rewardingly beautiful (I think).

Was that old portuguese sailor from the island of Açores?,
and the paper you are writing, is it for an geographic or history society?

I dont want to contradict you but I think that the portuguese started fishing in the great northern banks later, in the 16th, 17th century. The ships weren't sturdy enought for long voyages in such dangerous open seas, specially for the 3 to 4 months of cod or whale fishing season. Let's not forget that the great banks is one of the hardest (if not the hardest) fishing area in the world, "many portuguese sleep there".
I've made some searches about these themes and there are plenty of books about them but, unfortunatly not translated to english. Here are some titles translated by me:
"História da pesca do bacalhau ", History of Cod Fishing
"História dos barcos portugueses" History of Portuguese Boats
"BACALHAU (O) BIOGRAFIA E HISTÓRIA", The Cod, biography and history
Etc.
Etc.
I think that the best help is the Portuguese Navy Museum in Lisbon. They have got everything you may need there (pictures, construction projects, techniques, equipment, scaled and real size boats, dóris, etc., etc.)

Maybe some hollidays in sunny Portugal would help greatly your work.
I hope I've been helpful. Please feel free to ask again. It's a pleasure and an honor to help you in any way I can about that subject.

Thank you very much.
