IDC Whitepaper: Assessing the Benefits of Managed Remote Access

Although many companies have historically chosen to build out
remote access solutions in-house, the cost of infrastructure;
complexity of design and management in multiple access
technology environments; and the growing diversity of remote
workers, usage patterns, and device types make this approach
much less desirable for the modern business environment.

NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORK WORLD FUSION

By Jeff Caruso

"Virtualization" is a term that gets thrown around a lot by the
New Data Center set - HP, IBM and others - but not so often by
Cisco. That changed last week at the company's analyst meeting,
when suddenly Cisco was all about virtualized, on-demand,
adaptive networking. It turns out that the network is the
epicenter of the virtualization revolution, according to the
company. Who knew?

Oracle faces daunting challenges integrating PeopleSoft

Oracle has been talking the talk for 18 months, and it's time to
walk the walk. With PeopleSoft acquiescing to Oracle's proposal,
Oracle now has to reassure PeopleSoft's customers that it will
do the right thing. Meanwhile, the biggest loser in all this
appears to be IBM. Find out why in our story.

3Com to acquire TippingPoint for $430 million

3Com Monday announced plans to acquire TippingPoint
Technologies, a maker of intrusion-prevention systems, for
approximately $430 million in stock.

The WLAN standards alphabet keeps growing

The bad news is the alphabet of IEEE standards for wireless LANs
keeps expanding. The good news is you can ignore a lot of it, at
least until the new technology starts showing up in actual WLAN
products.

Today on Network Life: Sony Computer CTO on the new PSP

One of the great things about our new Network Life site is that
it gets to go places that Network World really wouldn't dare.
For instance, we're running an interview with a Sony Computer
executive on the new PlayStation Portable. It may not be
critical to your network, but it's important to your network
life.

Today on Layer 8 - a perfect stocking stuffer:

What folks are doing online after midnight; TiVo says, "We're
not a noun or verb!"; what percentage of Americans have a
digital camera?; and the start of the latest Weekly Caption
Contest; all this today and more at your home for
not-just-networking news.
