IDC Whitepaper: Assessing the Benefits of Managed Remote Access

Although many companies have historically chosen to build out
remote access solutions in-house, the cost of infrastructure;
complexity of design and management in multiple access
technology environments; and the growing diversity of remote
workers, usage patterns, and device types make this approach
much less desirable for the modern business environment.

Today's focus: Good launches 4.0 version of its wireless e-mail
software

By Keith Shaw

The number 4.0 must be a magic number in the wireless e-mail
space these days. Last week, we wrote about Research in Motion's
4.0 release of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This issue,
it's Good Technology's turn. The company last week launched its
GoodLink 4.0 server software with a raft of new features,
including:

* Good's Global Connect technology, which provides support for
GoodLink on any CDMA or GPRS carrier in any country around the
globe.

* Management of devices through its Zero-IT-Touch Administration
feature. The feature lets organizations deploy and upgrade the
GoodLink software and other applications for Palm OS or Windows
Mobile smart phones entirely over-the-air, with "no need for IT
to physically touch the mobile devices - even the first time
they are deployed," Good says. The Secure Over-The-Air (Secure
OTA) technology aims to lower total cost of ownership and the
complexity of managing wireless applications, the company added.
Device support for the Zero-IT-Touch management feature include
the PalmOne Treo 650, the Treo 600, XDA I, II and III (including
Sprint's PPC 6600 series), the Samsung i700, and HP iPaq 6300
series.

* Additional security features, including support for Advanced
Encryption Standard, password policy management, role-based
administration and FIPS 140-2 certification. The Secure OTA
feature also helps erase and restore data for lost or stolen
devices, and policy updates for anti-virus, firewall and device
security applications for Palm and Pocket PC smart phones. For
example, the software can help ensure that users have the latest
security application on their device, such as Symantec's
AntiVirus for Handhelds, Good says.

* End user interface enhancements, such as a 300% boost in the
over-the-air synchronization speed, and up to 25% increase in
battery life. The software also includes Outlook-like features,
including a Preview Pane, Calendar Week View, a Flag For
Follow-Up feature and Out of Office Assistant enhancements.

Good says the GoodLink 4.0 software will be available in the
middle of the first quarter of 2005. Head to the Good Web site (
<http://www.good.com/> ) for more information on the new
version.
