Today's first reader comments on the importance of wireless and convergence. He writes: "It is only natural to marry these [cordless phones and wireless LANs] together in the residential market and have a wireless router that connects to your cable and - since the technology is compatible - provides your Internet service as well as your phone service. We might as well add Internet wireless radio while we are at it. "The rollout would be to sell or 'give' the wireless 'base station' to the residential customer along with the service, then allow them to purchase the VoIP/wireless handsets to spread around the house along with other accessories. I think technology has moved beyond the necessity of wiring a home for voice or data." We'd agree - and we think our reader has a promising future as a telecom analyst if he chooses to change careers. Another insightful respondent suggests: "We have heard the industry talk about enhanced services for a decade. Now the carriers have no choice but to deploy them to offset lost revenue from their fast-fading monopoly businesses. Services such as Web conferencing with integrated VoIP and video are growing quickly - and represent large markets." Finally, a reply from one reader who had a distinctively unique view on purchase criteria. He writes about his most useful VoIP feature: "I have yet to receive a call from a telemarketer on my (Vonage) VoIP line." While he'd like to use a cable modem, he has elected to use DSL for data and a satellite dish for video. According to our reader, "switching to cable modem is not viable" because only DirecTV offers the NFL Sunday Ticket. He concludes, "Yes, this means my choice of broadband provider is largely driven by the NFL TV contract!" RELATED EDITORIAL LINKS What's the impact of residential VoIP?
