FRIGID WEATHER SENDS CHILL THROUGHOUT REGION
Just in time for today's first day of winter, a cold front sent temperatures
dipping toward the freezing mark in Southwest Florida overnight but a warming
trend should arrive by midweek. The cold air was expected to approach
record-low temperatures early today. The record low for Naples on Dec. 21 is 33
degrees.

SON GOES ON ACE SHOPPING SPREE IN DAD'S PLACE
He arches his back and stretches his arms forward. His father coaches him by
his side. Matthew Irgang prepares himself to race. He stretches. He rolls his
shoulders. He listens to his father rehearse a list of items. Remember your
sister wants a mixer, Mark Irgang says. Don't forget the camouflage jackets.
Seize as many fishing poles as you can, and make sure to grab a carton of ant
killer near aisle 27. He really needs that, he says.

PUBLIC BELIEVES IN-FLIGHT CELL PHONE BAN SHOULD REMAIN
People gabbing on their cell phone in the car, at the mall, in the grocery
store, or the doctor's office. Enough is enough. Please don't allow cell phones
to be used during flights, where passengers have no escape from an annoying
cell-phone user or incessant chatter throughout the cabin. That sums up the
sentiment of more than a dozen people interviewed randomly Monday at Southwest
Florida International Airport.

NAPLES BUSINESSMAN REFILES DEFAMATION SUIT
Naples businessman Joe Biasella has amended his federal suit against the city
of Naples, Councilwoman Penny Taylor and two former city councilmen, naming the

Steele tossed out most of the original case in November, saying Biasella hadn't
adequately made his case that he had been defamed by the trio.

REASONABLE GREETING
Steve Donovan's straight talk scores again. The Collier County School Board
member gets to the heart of a matter that leaves others tongue-tied: What to
say about Christmas in public schools. Donovan recommends embracing it and
downplays the notion that mentioning it or any other winter holiday is a slap
at any other that is not mentioned.

POSTAL WORKERS FEEL LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY CRUNCH
Last-minute holiday shoppers mean late-night work for post office employees.
Monday was one of the busiest mailing days of the year. Wednesday will be one
of the busiest delivery days. At Naples' main post office on Goodlette- Frank
Road, the stream of people was endless Monday. The line moved quickly, but so
did the incoming cars. Around noon, Sally Mahon timed the line 10 minutes.
Not bad, she and friend Carrie Robinson said.

CARE MOBILE DOCTORS HELP CHILDREN IN NEED SOME FOR THE FIRST TIME
Call it hope on wheels. It's hope in the form of a mobile doctor's office that
travels to underprivileged areas of Collier County and provides free medical
care to children. It's the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, one of 21 vans in the
country that deliver medical care to children who might not otherwise get it.
Collier County's Mobile just started operating this month.
