Google says it has fixed a flaw that could have allowed hackers to
search the contents of PCs running the company's desktop search tool.
According to a statement issued Monday by the Web search company, it
has rolled out a fix for the vulnerability. The flaw in the tool was
discovered in late November by a Rice University computer scientist
and two of his students. A Google representative said, "We were made
aware of this... [Continued]

YEEAAAH! ED FOSTER'S GRIPELOG Having so often been the bearer of
bad news from the legal front, I am thrilled to have some good news to
report for a change. The old-fashioned shrinkwrap license appears to
have suffered from what may well be a mortal wound. Microsoft,
Symantec, Adobe, CompUSA, Best Buy, and Staples have agreed in the
settlement of a California lawsuit to change their ways, and you can
already see the first results... [Continued]

Certainly an argument for buying up domains in bulk I suppose, the
recent eBay purchase of Rent.com is one of the more juicy acquisitions
to be sure. The BBC has given details that leads me to believe that
this is a deal that would have made Donald Trump proud. A transaction
of $385m in stocks and $30m in cash is definitely enough to get my
blood pumping, how about yours?... [Continued]

Spyware: Define Your Terms! (Internet)

The French philosopher Voltaire said, "If you wish to talk to me,
first define your terms." That admonition is more relevant than ever,
considering how computer literati are embroiled in controversy over
the exact definition of "spyware." Slangspeak catch-all terms like
"junkware" and "crapware" keep the broth on high simmer, while
companies like ComScore Networks, who want to legitimize their
particular brand of data gathering, spice things up by coining new
terminology: ComScore calls their... [Continued]

This is without a doubt the most serious flaw found in Internet
Explorer to date. Up to now, there was only a spoof vulnerability for
regular web sites, but this one strikes at the very heart of online
e-commerce, since it allows someone to spoof an HTTPS SECURE SSL site.
This vulnerability applies only to IE and ONLY to systems with SP--2
installed. It was not covered in the last released patch a week or...

Microsoft has delayed the release of the Longhorn server again.
Earlier this year, it projected the initial beta would emerge in the
first half of 2005. But that has now been put back to the second half
of the year. "We feel good about that date, and we'll drive forward to
that beta process," Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Windows
Server division, said this month. "We clearly have more clarity on
Longhorn beta... [Continued]

Security research suggests Linux has fewer flaws By Robert Lemos
The Linux operating system has many times fewer bugs than typical
commercial software, according to an upcoming report. The conclusion
is the result of a four-year research project conducted by
code-analysis company Coverity, which plans to release its report on
Tuesday. The project found 985 bugs in the 5.7 million lines of code
that make up the latest version of the Linux core operating system,...

waiting for the radio reports. There's lots of interesting sights and
activities on this site - including Santa Declassified, secrets which
I'm sure Santa would rather that you not know.... [Continued]
