Today's focus: End of year wireless devices news nuggets

By Keith Shaw

With the holidays right around the corner, we're cleaning up the
inbox so we can be fresh for 2005. Here are some quick snippets
of what's going on in the world of wireless devices:

* Pssst: Wanna get your Treo 650 to work on the Verizon net?

If all of your pals who own a Treo 650 on the Sprint network are
making you jealous and you're stuck with a Verizon contract,
check out this discussion thread (
<http://www.nwfusion.com/nlmobile919> ), which offers a way to
get the Treo 650 to work on the Verizon network. Try at your own
risk.

* @Road, RIM team to develop workflow process system

A company called @Road said it is working with Research In
Motion to create a workflow process system to automate
communications between a field service representative and a
mobile workforce supervisor. The system uses GPS data to help
minimize task reporting and data entry by the field worker and
automatically update work status and their location. More
details are at <http://www.road.com/> .

* Statistics time

Research firm In-Stat says the camera phone market is
skyrocketing, with 2004 seeing a 200% boom in shipments, as
image quality for camera modules improve. The company says that
14% of U.S. cell phone users own a camera phone, and In-Stat
expects that number will grow. More details of the stats can be
found at <http://www.instat.com/> .

* Worldwide mobile workforce boom

A second research firm is predicting that the worldwide mobile
workforce will increase from 17% this year to a staggering 89%
in 2008 (only four years away). The Radicati Group says the
wireless e-mail market will grow as system providers move from
enterprises to the wireless carriers. The firm says more than
3.2 million business professionals will be using enterprise
wireless e-mail by the end of 2004. Revenue for wireless e-mail
vendors is expected to be $1.16 billion by 2008, Radicati Group
added.

* Your Russian friend

If you're heading over to Russia over the holidays, make sure
you pick up this software before you go. Beiks launched the
English-Russian Dictionary for RIM BlackBerry devices. The
software features 20,000 unique English terms and is designed
for English-speaking professionals who need to communicate in
colloquial Russian when a standard translator or reference guide
is not available. The content is business-focused with commonly
used business terms, Beiks said. The software costs $19.95 and
can be downloaded from the Beiks Web site. In addition to the
BlackBerry versions, dictionaries are available for Palm OS,
Pocket PC and Linux devices (with Symbian OS support next year),
the company added.

We'll be back the week of Jan. 3 with our annual predictions for
2005 and a look back at how we did this year.
