A Linux Notebook for Less
$500 for a notebook? That's what you'll spend on the new
Wal-Mart/Linspire combo. It's a full-featured notebook with
a 14-inch screen that includes everything you need to know
to get cranking! Don't expect to watch DVDs, but it includes
Mozilla, Open Office and all of the rest. For details on
what else is inside, and how to get one, check out our
story.

Build the Ultimate Media Center PC
Until now, if you wanted Microsoft's top-of-the-line home
OS, Windows Media Center, you had to buy an expensive,
prebuilt system. You couldn't buy the OS off the shelf and
build your own. Well, that's all changed now with the latest
version. So, we set out to build the ultimate Windows Media
Center PC --using off-the-shelf components and saving money
to boot. How did we do? Check out our story -- it works
great and looks good, too. Don't be coerced by the black box
tyranny! Build your own today.

Is That XM in Your Pocket, Or ...
When I first heard about the upcoming handheld XM Satellite
Radio receiver, I had visions of Al Franken's TV reporter
spoof "The One-Man Mobile Uplink," where a huge satellite
dish sprouted from his head. But apparently, you don't have
to put a dish on your hat for the MyFi to get a signal: The
antenna's inside, and it really works. There are drawbacks,
of course, but this is the only game in town so far. I used
to be critical of satellite radio's success, but my recent
experience with Sirius has been so good that my opinions
have changed. And now, you can put it in your pocket! Our
review has the details.

Amazing Dual-Layer DVD for Less
Sony's supposed to be the expensive brand, right? Well, not
when it comes to the latest dual-layer burners. We just
looked at Sony's latest, a second-generation drive, and not
only did we like it, the low price blew us out of the water.
Ignore the $150 list -- our online pricing engine found it
for just a bit more than half that. So, if you want a
recordable DVD, check out our review -- and let us lead you
to the best place to buy it online for a lot, lot less.

iTunes Phone Coming Up
Here comes the iTunes phone! Apple's vice president of
applications confirmed that his company is working with
Motorola to come up with a combo device. Could this be the
bombshell rollout at this year's Macworld Expo in January?
Our story has all of the details we know, and more. Who
knows, maybe Bono will make a return appearance, too!

Case-Mod Expert Turns Motorcycle into PC
It's true! Over on ExtremeTech, their master case modder is
building a PC that looks like a motorcycle! Don't ask why,
but the process is oddly fascinating. He's up to part four
of the process, and it's really starting to come along. I
can't wait to benchmark this monster when it's done -- but
wait! Should we measure it in gigahertz or horsepower?

Robo Pup for the Holidays
He's so cute! Sony's latest AIBO is much more doglike than
in the past, and much more self-aware, too. Our PCMag.com
editor Lance Ulanoff has been scaring the kids and the
kitties with it for the past month. He finally tore himself
away from cyber-pooch long enough to review it, and boy was
he impressed. Don't miss our gallery of pictures--if you
haven't seen a robotic dog lately, you'll be amazed at how
much they've changed.

Spyware Out of Control, Now 'Giant' Problem
Pundit John C. Dvorak has woken up to the pandemic all
around us. Yes, it's spyware, and it is out of control.
John's been infected, and he is not happy. But he's looked
into the problem and has some answers. Read his column for a
perspective on the problem. Even Microsoft thinks it's a big
issue, as it snapped up anti-spyware company Giant late last
week. Alas, they probably should have done more due
diligence -- apparently Giant's IP is not their own.
