Negotiating with Oracle Post-Canary Swallowing

If you thought Oracle was a tough negotiator pre-PeopleSoft,
you're in for a treat now that it's swallowed the canary.
Opinion is surprisingly divided when it comes to whether or
not Oracle will have to continue to offer sharp discounts in
the coming months, but to my mind, you'd better be prepared
for Oracle to get tougher, not softer.

I nabbed an expert Oracle negotiations coach, Anthony
Bradley, who was kind enough to share some tips for how to
approach licensing and support negotiations. My favorite tip
amounts to a bit of psychological warfare: Namely, sandwich
Oracle reps' visits between visits from competitors' reps,
just to make sure they know they're not the only fish in the
ocean, PeopleSoft or no.

Check out the column for more tips.

1. Opinion: Customers Will Still Call the Shots Post-PeopleSoft Merger

David Coursey disagrees with me on the shift of power
post-Oracle-PeopleSoft merger. If he's right, customers will
still be in the driver's seat in 2005, thanks to the trends
toward open-source systems and commodity pricing. Customers
want more for their money, Coursey says, along with less
upfront investment and to pay as they go--a situation that
will continue to put tremendous pressure on vendors.

2. News: Oracle Reaches Out to JDE User Group

Co-President Chuck Phillips got in touch with Quest, the JDE
users group known to have a rocky relationship with
PeopleSoft. Oracle dismissed the idea that it would sell off
bits and pieces of PeopleSoft, promising new versions of
PeopleSoft Enterprise and the new version of JDE's OneWorld,
but the company stopped short of promising extended support
for EnterpriseOne Version XE. Nor did it commit to working
with IBM on software and middleware, as PeopleSoft had
agreed to do.

3. News: Senator Decries Use of Database to Halt Chronic Returners

You purchase an outfit, wear it to the company holiday
party, and return it the next day. That's one example of
what retailers consider theft, and they're using The Retail
Exchange and its SQL Server database to flag such chronic
merchandise returners. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer claims the
retailers are "blacklisting" consumers, however, and plans
to introduce legislation requiring retailers to prominently
disclose precise return prohibition formulas before
customers make purchases.

4. News: Oracle Launches Storage Initiative

The company is proposing for storage the same technique of
tying together cheap boxes as it's pushing in its grid
architecture, and it's hooking up with a slew of major
storage vendors to push the idea.

5. News: OpenOffice 2.0 Close to Beta

The Sun-sponsored open-source office suite is
feature-complete and comes with a personal database
management system, along with improved capability with
Microsoft Office files.
