(Microsoft will continue to provide support for users of these products.) Microsoft will use the acquisition to create an antispyware solution for users of Windows 2000 and later versions. Key personnel from Giant will join Microsoft to make this possible. A beta release of the as-yet-unnamed product is planned within one month. The Balance 14.1-inch Notebook Computer with CD-ROM Drive is the latest addition to the Balance 14.1-inch laptop computer line. For $498, you get a 1.0-GHz Via C3 processor, 128MB memory, 30GB hard drive, CD ROM drive, and a 14.1-inch display. The brains of the system is Lindows/Linspire version 4.5, which offers a pseudo-Windows experience. Not a bad bargain, but definitely not the one you want to spend your hard-earned cash on. The new model is the first in the world to include a storage technique called perpendicular recording. The technology will be used to create both a 40GB and an 80GB drive; they should be released in April and July 2005, respectively.
