Take a look at the "brute" by John Kleinbauer. He has a pcb router 
design that is economical and quick to put together with off the 
shelf part using hand tools. Here is the link:

The driver boards for a router are available at several sources. 
Xylotex makes a nice plug and play that drives readily available 
bipolar stepper motors.

I use the 276 inch ounce on my mini-mill.  The smaller ones there 
would work fine for a small router of Kleinbauers design.
