It is a grim, jaw-clenching stench that makes you sad but glad that you are not the poor soul in that white body bag with the black zipper being carried from a basement grocery store to the bed of a pickup three days after a tsunami trapped you there. TRAGEDY IN ASIA: EXPERTS SAY TSUNAMIS COULD EVEN HIT HERE It can't happen here. It could happen here. It shouldn't happen here. Planet Earth continues to amaze scientists, especially when a natural catastrophe slams a previously protected land mass. While Indonesia is one of the global hot spots for earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, documented as an important link in the Pacific Rim's infamous Ring of Fire, Thailand and India's Indian Ocean coast are not. They were caught off-guard. PROPOSAL TO TRANSFER AIRPARK NOT TAKING OFF A proposal to transfer the Everglades Airpark from the ownership of Collier County government to Everglades City officials is in a holding pattern of federal review. In February, Collier commissioners and Everglades City officials heartily endorsed the idea and instructed attorneys to draw up papers allowing the transfer of ownership. Today, there are more unanswered questions than answers about the possible transfer. STATE INVESTIGATING DEATH OF MAN STUNNED BY POLICE With state prosecutors beginning an investigation into what killed a Fort Myers man who died Tuesday after an altercation with Collier County Sheriff's Office deputies, officials said it could take weeks and possibly months before the cause of Christopher Hernandez's death is known. WILDLIFE OFFICIALS RESCUE SICK MANATEE, CALF Local wildlife agencies rescued a mother manatee and her calf Wednesday after watching the mother list in a canal near Port of the Islands for two days. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials first spotted the mother and her calf on Monday, said Dr. Martha Keller, an FWC veterinarian. The injured mother manatee was swimming sideways and looked lethargic, Keller said.
