Ding Dong, the Mac Is Dead

That's what John C. Dvorak has concluded. He doesn't base
his conclusions on market-share numbers, but instead via an
intriguing online stat: how much Internet activity is
Mac-based. And the answer is a miniscule and declining
amount. John has laid out three reasons for the impending
doom, and then adds a zinger: that the Mac's vaunted ease of
use is what will slay it in the end. Read his
thought-provoking column about why the Macintosh will fade
away. And then complain to him, not to me!

Low-Cost DLP HDTV Reviewed

$2,000 may seem like a lot of money, but it's an amazing
price for a 50-inch, DLP-based HDTV. We just got our hands
on Olevia's newest DLP and put it through our HDTV lab
tests. Is the TV good enough to stand up to the gold
standard? Read our review - this just might be your next TV.

Installing an HDTV Antenna

The great thing about HDTV, after you go out and buy the
expensive set, is that in many parts of the country, great
content is available over the air. But you'll need an
antenna to pick up those signals. It's not hard - HDTV is
broadcast on the UHF band. But as ExtremeTech's Loyd Case
found out, there are gotchas around every corner. Read
Loyd's tale of hilarity and woe, as he tries to put an HDTV
antenna on his roof. It works - but it really shouldn't have
taken that long.

Microsoft Grid Project Due Out Next Year

What's Microsoft been up to in grid/distributed computing?
The company's not talking, but we've ferreted out some
interesting details about the hush-hush "Bigtop" project.
Our sources say it involves loosely coupled machines, and
perhaps even a new version of Windows. Read our story for
more details on what "Bigtop" could be, and when to expect
it.

Cell-Phone-Worm Source Leaked

The Cabir worm wasn't a huge problem, due to the relatively
small installed base of Symbian Series 60. But that's all
about to change, as the worm's source code has been leaked
onto the Net. That could enable any moderately facile script
kiddie to build a version that attacks Brew or J2ME phones -
which have a much broader base. Find out how it spreads, and
where it's likely to pop up next. Your phone could be at
risk.

Crazy Technology Predictions

What's up in 2005? According to Lance Ulanoff, chief bottle
washer at PCMag.com, a whole lot of surprises. Bill Gates
retires, Apple revives the Newton, DSL dies and many other
slightly off-kilter predictions. Don't miss his look at
2005. I can't wait to rub his nose in them 364 days from
now! Plus, 30 megatrends that will shape IT in 2005 - from
the horse's mouth.

New Telecom Technologies Under Fire.

Did you hear what happened to Philadelphia? The
Pennsylviania government basically absconded with the city's
rights to put up 802.11 around town. And that's a bad thing,
says our wireless topic center editor. Big telecom is using
the long arm of the law to stunt the growth of yet another
life-changing technology: VOIP. Vonage won its case in
Minnesota, but now the golden state has VOIP on the run.
Find out why in our news story. Because of all this, and
more, David Coursey has the answer: Boycott Verizon!
