Steve,
Thanks for asking and "Hi" to both you and Adrian.
I'm still here. I'm a lurker on the list though .... too much to do
after retiring :-)
I've been doing much more official and unofficial instructing since
changing my occupation from (highly stressed) project engineer to
(content and happy) performance driving instructor.
Last year (2003), just after retirement, I was fortunate enough to race
a vintage race-prepared Ford T-Bird in VARA and SOVREN events. First
time I'd actually raced in ten years and it was great. We did pretty
well. That car was certainly different from Lotuses I've raced.
It was similar in one way though. Like the Lotuses running against big
bore machinery, it takes the role of an underdog and that makes it fun
to play with the fast runners. The car wasn't quite in a league with
the very fastest of the Cobras, Stingrays, Mustangs but it was closer
than anyone expected.
By the way, Adrian is right. These track day events are really a lot of
low pressure fun. Incidentally, most of the cars are indeed
street-driven with only a very few dedicated race cars. Many do,
however, install 5-point harnesses (required by this particular group).
Roll bars are typically required for open cars although coupes can run
without them.
I still have the Elans and now I have more time to take the yellow one
out for a drive now and then. No roll bar on that one so I have another
car for on-track use.
Hope you all have a great new year.
Rod
