Jim,
Writing is certainly a valid way to earn some bucks for Boondocking and
I understand that some folks get some spending money that way. If I
were successfully selling articles and fillers for road money, I would
share my techniques, difficulties, and successes with other
boondockers. The non-fiction market is huge for those who can provide
what editors want.
Alas, I rarely ever query publications with story ideas these days.
Many years ago I sent out many and all but one or two were rejected.
The only real success I had back then was writing Western horsemanship
articles and confessions. None of them were queried but submitted
through the slush pile. Most of the horse articles were published. Most
confession stories were not.
2002, I did a query about the troubles I had with my rig the first
three times I tried to get from VA to the Slabs. Trailer Life wrote
back and wanted the complete article. BUT! Big but. They wanted pics
with it of me participating with other campers in commercial
campgrounds, pics of rigs, all of us having fun together, etc.
I don't use commercial CGs or have any interest in taking fun-time
photos for an article about multiple rig problems that I had and the
learning experiences. I did plan to submit photos with the article that
would have depicted the actual conditions I faced with some of the
problems. I kept a detailed log as the trip progressed.
Of course, if I was to do a travel article involving commercial CGs or
a particularly enjoyable travel account, I would submit plenty of color
photos of me and a bunch of folks having fun, rig photos, as well as
sidebars with much info.
Is anyone on the group doing any writing and having financial success
with it?
