You have to enable the shell when you start it in embedded mode.
(http://neo4j.com/docs/stable/shell-starting.html#shell-enabling-remote).
Once that is done you can connect to it via the neo4j-shell command. You
just need to download the DB and extract it so that you have the bin
directory containing the neo4j-shell executable.

Until now, I thought that this needs a running neo4j server? Is the neo4j
server enabled when running in embedded mode? esp. when started via spring
data ..
