It looks to me, however, as if the cypher() step is only a passthrough 
mechanism,
allowing Gremlin users to sent Cypher to Neo4j:

This is certainly a welcome capability, but I was thinking of something far 
more general
(eg, allowing Cypher use with any TinkerPop backend).
