Hi,
I appeared to be able to start the server with the command "sudo neo4j
start" after I established
the following in .bashrc:
> NEO4J_HOME=/var/lib/neo4j
> export NEO4J_HOME
> PATH="$PATH:${NEO4J_HOME}/bin"
> export PATH

Once this was in place, then the neo4j command was visible, and it appeared
to be able to
start the server just fine. Somehow this appears to differ from "sudo
service neo4j-service start".
That's how it looks at the moment.
