I have a Dell Latitude with some neomagic chip on it (don't ask me which one, i don't really recall and I'm too bloody lazy to go put the machine on :-)). I've discovered that you can suspend/standby nicely, as long as you do it in a text console. If you try to do it with X onscreen, you'll surely get problems. I always switch to a text console before suspending the machine and it works nicely. Hope this helps.
