All I've ever 'assumed' (assume = you know ...) is that some tubes are
coated (painted) red (red-orange) to improve contrast. Are those tubes
coated, or look like they may have been sometime in the past ? That
coating comes off pretty easy after all these years.

Of course, I always wondered why they even bothered. A simple piece of
red acrylic does the job nicely. Maybe acrylic was really expensive
back then (?).
