One of the digital electronics courses I took at the
local tech school used the TTL Cookbook as the textbook!

Even though now somewhat dated, the general info in that book
is still very useful.  It goes into great detail about 
having enough despiking and bypass capacitors, in order to
keep the logic working reliably.

And then, there are some real gems of thought too about
such things as synchronizing everything to the system clock.

Don's later CMOS cookbook is a good one too.

Glad to know there are still guys out there who want to know
how to use discrete logic!
