This is just to say that i have released working code to implement a useful display from four IV-17/IV-4 multisegment VFD tubes, a pic18f25k22 and an HV5812 driver IC(or similar)
The poor man's four letter word ? Who knows ! There are commands to place text directly at a specific position in a display of many tubes; Scrolling upto 50 characters between two tubes; Upper and lower case English fonts, 8 numeric fonts, 15 transition effects, onboard RTC clock (needs to be refreshed occasionally so ideal for GPS/WWV sources) Displays of upto 250 tubes (in multiples of 4) may be built and controlled easily using 38400Baud 8N1 TTL level serial data with minimal host processing overhead.
