The boric acid/ sodium borate used as electrolyte is quite harmless. Toxicity about that of table salt. Boric acid even is used as an eye wash as an aseptic. Pouring it in your coffe, however, I would not advice (aside from the tase ;-) )

Good point - however, as a matter of principle, I am cautious of the contents of any pre-1980s kit, less it contains something nasty.
