Yup - I was running at between 5 & 5.5mA and they seem plenty bright enough. Must say mine aren't in the best of condition but are un-dimmed/ poisoned and work great. The 5,000 hour rating seems very conservative - if these were supposed to be used on pin-ball alley scoring etc., then I would have expected better. Also, the data sheet implies manufacture from 1962 onwards, so mercury doping would have been commonplace - they certainly have that hue to their colour. I would have expected a figure in the 100,000 hour bracket - running them at well under max current will help anyway.
