The 555 is a classic Experimenters chip. it is even sold at places like Radio Shack, and many folks have a tube of them in stock.

Hobby suppliers like Futurlec show them at 25 cents US each. and 17 cents in Hundreed lots. The 34063 in DIP is more like 45 cents each, and I know I don't have any of those in a drawer...
