Reminds me of a story I heard once of a Military cadett group going down to the states to give a marching demonstraion in Upper New york state. The next day was a cold morning so they wanted some Either to start their bus for the trip home. BUT you need a prescription to buy Either. Apparently they went all over town to find a Doctor who was willing to write a prescription for a bus.

For some reason, "Doctor Who" jumped out at me in that paragraph. As in "Doctor Who was willing to write a prescription for a bus."

I was a motor transportation mechanic in the US Marine Corps, so I know the system you are talking about. The M813 5-ton (the one with the stick-shift) had a cold-weather start system that was basically a shot of ether. If you wanted to be naughty, you could hit the ether button on the road when the engine wasn't cold, almost like a nitrous button (lol). I can't recall off hand if the M929 (the one with the automatic transmission and air brakes) had a similar system. I kind of think that it had something more modern like a battery operated heating system. It's been too long. Either way, if you didn't have any ether you could just crank the engine until it heated up enough to start.. It wouldn't be something that would leave you dead in the water (unless you didn't have much battery, I suppose)..
