you are right about that :-) But during night time the sun does not work as a decent source anymore because 12000km of stone are a pretty good shield, at least for solar particles. Then again, Nixie tubes have problems in striking in dark rooms at daytime as well. So I guess it is not the solar particles after all :-).

But it has to be something different from light that is scarce in dark rooms since gases have an ionization energy of roughly 60...100eV and ordinary light photons will not do the trick.
