Other similar ICs (SG3844, TA8718, etc.) are also obsolete. It's just a 4-wire serial interface but at VFD voltages. I would use a microcontroller and four level shifters to drive the display. Even if it's a dot matrix display, you can fit a 128-character ASCII bitmap in 1kB or so, and there are plenty of micros that have enough flash ROM storage for this.
