I did this several times as a kid and never did get them to set on fire, even when sitting in a puddle of gasoline. :-p I have had a couple of cases split, but only just, nothing dramatic at all. Not saying it couldn't, just what happened when I tried it.

I must have been 5 years old the first and last time I snapped two 9V batteries head-to-head; good thing my father was watching and told me that it was not a good idea.
