A single lit plate, such as an "exit" sign, goes back to 1914, but the 
multiplate 10 numeral digit, was applied for, in 1954. That, however, was 
in the U.S. It doesn't address patents in other countries.

Does anyone here know when edge-lit displays were introduced?
