I worked for years in a Governement building in Hull Quebec (Place du Portage) that had OTIS elevators with this style touch buttons. Most of the staff thought they were heat activated and were worried that if there was a fire they would call to the fire floor.

(several years later there was a mandatory refit of all elevators to have a "Fireman" key and they were connected to the fire alarm so that a fire would automatically put them in service mode and call them to the lobby, where only the fireman’s key would make them work.)

I can recall on frustrating days I found that a wave of the hand was sufficient to fire all the buttons on the way off the elevator.
