Digi-Key does tend to be expensive for small orders (they're competitive when
you order things in quantity), and their free shipping is generally slow. But
if you need an obscure part in a hurry, they're great - most of my orders ship
within 20 minutes of my submitting the order, and if I pay for fast shipping, I
can have my parts in a couple of days.

For common parts quickly, however, I go to my local Radio Shack. Which is
*very* local - the one in the town where I used to live went out of business
and I bought most of their carded stock on the cheap, and hung it up on
pegboard in my back room:

If I need a common part at three in the morning, there's nothing like being
able to just grab one without even having to leave my house!
