A bit of this will depend on the clock design. A number of clocks use the 
CPU to control the high voltage supply. If the CPU locks up for some 
reason, the HV supply can go up in a puff of smoke. If the clock has that 
type of power supply, then I would say that a UPS is more important than a 
surge protector.
