This project involves equipping the South Pole Telescope for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). This is a method of taking data simultaneously with several telescopes in different parts of the world, then shipping the data to a central correlator to detect interference fringes between the 'scopes.

It's done at the South Pole because there's very little water in the air. The receiver operating at hundreds of GigaHertz likes it that way.

The necessary equipment included a hydrogen maser for a stable timebase, and a machine that will record a gigabyte per second to hard disk continuously for several minutes.

The VLBI partner for the first test is the ALMA array in Chile, which is a smaller interferometric array (up to 15 km baseline).

My job is building the equipment to massage the signal from the receiver (the tuner's IF signal covers 4-8 GHz) and other stuff to power and control the receiver.

Can we get one of those from Alibaba?

If not... what kind of signals will that baby listen to, and why
Antarctica? Low human-origin background noise?

It's at the South Pole. I'm not going, but the gizmo is shipping out
    this Monday
    AM.
