Hi,

No, you don't need these pins, and in most tubes you should not connect 
them as they sometimes are connected to internal structures that should not 
be powered.

These pins are only used during manufacture to release the mercury stored 
in the small glass tube that can be seen inside the small spiral wire in 
some tubes, the giver pill.
