When I needed to take a bunch of jewelry pictures one time, I used a translucent storage bin. I had a dark background to set the jewelry on (not sure if a dark background would be best for nixies) which was set inside the bin, and shone a bright desk lamp (maybe two) on the outside of the bin so that it would be diffused inside. I used a small aperture for maximum depth of field, and no flash, with a tripod and shutter delay. They came out pretty well. One thing to make sure of is to use the manual white balance feature of your camera if it has it. Otherwise slight variations in your subject can make the camera use a different white balance and the pictures will not all look like they're lit the same.
