Till now I never heard of the 'atomium' ; there's a nice history at

Many of the 'atomic age' buildings in the US are gone now, probably because 
many of them were just downright ugly, but this structure certainly is 
unique and I'm glad to see it's been preserved and appreciated. Very 
cutting-edge for 1958.
