Simulations definitely are not cheating; I've found many non-obvious bugs 
that would have caused problems ranging from unreliable operation, to 
non-functional, and even smoke/fire.

My last project (nixie/dekatron bench power supply) was not properly 
simulated and I ended up with minor PCB workarounds for the first time; 
none of my previous PCBs had bugs because they were thoroughly simulated.
