Sometimes reversing the polarity can shake things up enough to make some dark digits start lighting up.
Set it up briefly so that one of the dark digits is the anode (+) side and the normal anode is the cathode (-) side. Of course, still be using the proper series resistance so that if or when it does light up it does not self destruct. Try that and let us know what happens.
