It's mostly a traditional transformer/rectifier/capacitor supply, though it has a switching regulator to produce +5V [Nifty device, too. Drop-in replacement for LM340 series, except it's way more efficient hence less heat].
Nothing is hot. I can smell the warmth of the 7971's (they are about 3.5 watts apiece), and a bit from the power supply (the transformer). Tonight I will be brave and let it run from the AC line; it's been running from the isolation transformer for a week with no issues.
