I dismantled the prototype Tesla Meets Edison as it had served its purpose
as a test for the final clock and while removing the tubes I noticed that
they all had penciled numbers written on the rear of the cathode casing.

Any clues as to why a mass produced item would have hand annotation on it?

The tubes in question are ITT GNP-7AH.
