It could also be a shorted Nixie, I had that recently, just whacking it gently 
with a pencil fixed that one but I’ve read about people burning off shorts 
inside Nixies with low voltag high current. Have you tested another Nixie in 
its position or swapped places on two of them to see if the fault follows the 
Nixie?

The DAWE one looks a lot like what AVO built (or whoever the original designer 
was, in many cases Marconi when it comes to some AVO designs), I’ll try to find 
my AVO manual and see if they are in any way similar.
