Thanks for the suggestions.  I have a number of INS-1 neon tubes.  They are 
rather large, but usable.  I was hoping to find a smaller bulb with a lens 
end.

I have seen thyratrons before, but have not found explanations on how to 
drive them.  If you have any pointers that would be appreciated.
