I dont see a connection to the Z-axis (or did you use connections from the 
back-side of the case ?) so I'm surprised to see such a crisp text display. 
I was planning to turn my USM-117 into a scope-clock, but I found a decent 
kit  online last year. Even though I have an HP digital scope, I still like 
bringing out this oldie for every now and then for bench work.
